5 Must Have Beach Products: Esthetician, Connie Henry

I’ve spent a good 30 years of my life growing up at the Jersey Shore — long before it was a monument to “poofs,” and ridiculous orange spray tans. My summers were blissfully spent lounging on the beach, cruising the boardwalk at night and eating greasy Mack and Manco’s pizza with my family. But similar to the Jersey Shore cast, as a teenager I was obsessed with keeping up on my “perfect,” summer tan. It wasn’t until I finally became an esthetician 20 years ago that I realized some sun damage cannot be undone. There were too many beach days where I would carelessly sans the SPF to lather up with baby oil and bake in the sun for hours. Although my passion for the beach has never dwindled, I am much more cautious as to how I expose myself while I’m there. It’s a common myth that one cannot get a tan with SPF on or achieve the same level of desired darkness. SPF however, merely filters out the toxins that can cause skin cancer but in no way prevents someone from getting a tan. Picture your skin as one of the sand sifters we all had as a kid; while the seashells are stuck on the top the sand still could filter through to make the perfect sand castle. While the seashells are the dangerous UV rays, the sun’s natural benefits are still able to penetrate the skin. Skin cancer is no doubt scary and while other cancers attack specific organs, skin cancer can spread anywhere…even your lips. So before you decide to forgo the beach or hide under an umbrella in fear, I’m here to introduce my “5 Must Have Beach Products,” for this summer. So you can enjoy the sun, while still keeping your skin happy and healthy.

1. Jan Marini SPF 30 with Antioxidants: Even if were not at the beach, our skin is still at risk. Jan Marini’s SPF 30 is not only light weight and water proof, but it can be worn under make up without giving you that “greasy,” sun block look.  Regardless if I’m hitting the beach or the pool, I wear this product every day underneath my regular foundation as an extra preventative.

2. Dr. Gross Alpha Beta Glow Pads: Dr Gross’s Alpha Beta Glow Pads are essentially a self-tanning wipe. But before you shrink away from this thinking you’ll turn orange, these pads give you a beautiful glow and a healthy, sun kissed look. And an extra bonus, they have an anti-agining exofiliant in them as well as antioxidants. Now what kind of tanning bed can do that?

3. Chantecaille Lip Screen SPF 15: When skin cancer first comes to mind, we rarely think of the lips being affected. But any time out in the sun leaves your body exposed, especially such sensitive skin such as the lips.

4. A Good Sunhat: It’s great that big, floppy sunhats are back in style because this is one of my top “must haves,” for the beach. Sunhats protect not only the face, but the sensitive skin of the scalp while keeping you cool.

5. Institut Esthederm UV inCellium spray: A new product, with a patent product called “Uv inCellium,” that helps your skin protect itself while hydrating your skin. Love to have that natural “dewy,” look? This product is perfect on the face and body to give it a light, refreshed look. Wear it over make up to fix it, or spray down when your outside. By far my top product of this season.

Update Your Summer Look

Today’s solstice marks the official beginning of summer! Whether you’re braving the city heat wave or staying down the shore you still want to look your best.  If you already wear a broad spectrum SPF daily and practice a good skincare regimen then your summer beauty routine is going to be a breeze. Here are some pointers to further enhance your natural beauty while beating the heat & humidity…

  1. Ditch the liquid foundations and opt for a little tinted moisturizer with an SPF.  A little goes a long way for a fresh and dewy complexion.  *Try applying with a damp sponge for even coverage.
  2. Try bronzer. The golden tones will give you a healthy looking sun-kissed glow.
  3. Exchange your high definition powder blush for a natural flush with crème blush.
  4. Matte lips can be a bit too dramatic for warmer weather.  Instead try a neutral gloss or brightly colored lip stain.
  5. Heavily concentrated fragrances can quickly become overpowering on hot days.  A lighthearted roll-on perfume like Kai is easy to throw in your bag and smells delightfully fresh.
  6. Smoky eyes are too intense for the beach.  Instead sweep a golden shadow on your lids to keep your look light and modern.
  7. Don’t: succumb to raccoon eyes.  Do: use a waterproof Eyeliner and Mascara
  8. Save your dark nail polish for Fall & Winter.  Nudes, Neons, and Pastels will keep your look updated & cool.
  9. Lightly filling in or enhancing your brows will enable you to wear less makeup and place the emphasis on your eyes.  Comb brows in place with a clear gel or a mousse to keep them in place all day.
  10. Rehydrate & Reapply often.  UV Incellium spray instantly refreshes, hydrates, sets makeup, and adds extra protection with SPF 8.

June Beauty

With Memorial Day in the rear-view mirror, the unofficial beginning of summer is here. This also means baring more skin. Like underarms, legs, and bikini lines. Sure, taking care of these areas is a bit easier in “the off-season”. What’s a woman to do? I recommend to my most frequent bathing suit wearers a bikini and underarm wax every 3 weeks. A pair of boy-shorts keeps you feeling less exposed during the regrowth period and be sure to use PFB Vanish every day to keep the hairs from becoming ingrown. As for the legs, I weaken under pressure and pull out my razor. As mid-evil as it may sound, leg stubble is just not an option. A daily dose of your favorite body scrub like the Lemongrass Sugar Scrub from Get Fresh will keep your alligator skin away and make shaving more comfortable. When summer comes to a grinding halt after Labor Day and your bathing suit finds its way to the out-of-season drawer, give yourself 5-6 weeks of regrowth before your next wax.

Look young, feel younger.

Mad Men Moment

I have oily skin. Despite the fact that my skin is beginning to change it still has a personality disorder which causes it to believe it’s a Fry Daddy, especially in the summer. So it was with great reluctance that I used the Eve Lom cleanser given to me by Rescue owner Danuta Mieloch. It felt so counterintuitive. It comes in a little jar and looks like a Vaseline body scrub?! But when I touched it I fell instantly in love. I am obsessed with this product. I have a very Mad Men moment each time I use it, it’s so wonderfully 1960’s. Joan Holloway would love this product. It makes me want to sit at my Grandmother’s vanity table and apply a full face of makeup just so I can Eve Lom it off. It has to be one of the lightest silkiest most luxurious cleansers out there. And it breaks down makeup like nobody’s business. When I get home at night I’m tired and really not trying to do a lot with a skin care ritual. Eve Lom makes it so easy. You simply massage this product into your skin and watch it liquefy into a light oily consistency. You then press a warm moist cloth to the skin which will remove it easily. Follow this with a cool moist cloth press and you’re done. Use whatever is appropriate for your skin afterwards; for me it’s a spritz of Ayurvedic rosewater and a little Valmont Factor 3 eye cream.

Remember: oil removes oil. Eve Lom is very compatible with my skin type and seems to be exactly what it needs.

Beat the heat & humidity!

With the temperatures heating up and the sun shining long into the evening, it’s safe to say that summer is upon us.  If you feel like you’ve been stuck in a rut take the opportunity to embrace summer as the perfect time to revisit your beauty & skincare routines.  The heat & humidity may bring seemingly endless beauty challenges but don’t fret, we’ll keep you looking cool and collected all summer long. First things first, we all know how important it is to wear broad spectrum sun protection.  Hopefully by now you don’t even think twice about wearing a daily sunscreen on your face and anywhere that your body is exposed to direct sunlight.  But did you know that SPF has an expiration?  If you planned on using the same sunscreens you used last season  I strongly recommend you throw them away and start fresh.  Often times these products sit in your beach bag and endure temperatures and light exposure that are not conducive to normal shelf life. It’s just not worth the risk.  After all using an SPF that is expired defeats the purpose since we can no longer depend on it to protect us from the sun’s harmful rays. While we’re on the topic I know there are those of you who feel as though you’ve sacrificed an enviable golden glow in the name of remaining sun savvy and skin cancer free.  Believe it or not there are a number of ways to achieve that sun kissed glow without the harmful effects of nasty UVA/B’s.  Institut Esthederm’s line of sun care (Adaptasun) is a special patented formula that protects the skin from harmful rays yet allows you to get a bit of color. It’s not your traditional sunblock. Adaptasun actually teaches your skin cells to rev up melanin production hence you obtain a bit of color and utilize your skin’s natural defenses. It’s been a favorite in France for many years and now we’re lucky enough to have it stateside! If you are like me you are already in the habit of dodging the sun so you are porcelain white year round. Yet you’d like a bit of color for summer and those orange spray tans just won’t do. At Rescue we offer a treatment that requires absolutely no work for you other than scheduling a “bronze & buff” appointment! Leave it to our estheticians to scrub & buff your entire body before evenly applying a light, natural looking self tanner that is never streaky. **A very popular treatment for summer brides! The most common question I receive this time of year is “What moisturizer should I be using?” It is a personal preference yet the best rule of thumb is to use something lighter than you used during the winter. I prefer moisturizers with a gel consistency like Biologique Recherche’s ADN Silkgen and Institut Esthederm’s Cellular Water Gel. These are both great for all skin types, hydrate beautifully, yet they do not leave the skin slick or greasy. If your skin is oily and the sweat and humidity are making it seem impossible to stay matte then you’ll want to try switching cleansers to something gentle yet effective such as Sebuwash and incorporating Shine Control Fluid. You may also find that in the summer less is more and all you really need is a multi-tasking serum such as Cellular Concentrate. Wearing this beneath an SPF during the day is a smart way to maintain healthy skin all summer long. If you aren’t diligent about applying a daily SPF and/or you find that they make you breakout try switching to UV incellium spray. It has the equivalent of an SPF 8+ and doesn’t add an extra layer of goop to your face! A great alternative for anyone who is blackhead/breakout prone. Wearing makeup can be pretty tricky in the summer but there are some little tricks that keep it simple.

  1. Switch foundations for tinted moisturizers. My favorite is a multitasking tinted moisturizer by Dr. Dennis Gross that is available for all skin tones and even incorporates an SPF. It honestly doesn’t get any easier than this!
  2. Better than waterproof mascara and eyeliner, switch yours to Blinc. They simply do not run and better yet they are very easy to remove.
  3. Bronzers can be intimidating at first but with the guidance of our makeup artist Maria Gulraiz you can highlight your best facial features, look naturally sun kissed, and define your cheekbones in minutes. (Schedule a consultation: 215.772.2766)
  4. Keep blotting tissues in your handbag. These will come in handy when you feel a bit oily or begin to sweat.
  5. Find a new summer palette to keep your look fresh. This season I’m loving Chantecaille’s Coral Reefs Palette.

Last but certainly not least is the most important beauty trick of all. Drink plenty of water. Hydrate often, stay cool, stay sun savvy, and have a happy summer! Esthetician and Owner of Rescue Rittenhouse Spa, Danuta Mieloch
