Body Acne and How to Treat It

dealing with acne on your body…

~

It’s already hard enough when you have to deal with acne on your face, but dealing with acne on your body is another story.

For some of us, skin breakouts can be more far reaching than the face, influencing bigger territories of the body. It normally happens on the back, midsection, neck, shoulders, and upper arms. We spend most of our AM and PM skincare regmen concentrating on the face, neck and décolletage. It is time we start paying attention to our back and work on getting the skin on our back “summer-ready”.

Back acne, simply called bacne, can be very hard to fix. There are a lot of products that are acne fighting and work really really well on the face, but your back does not respond as well to them. Even though the root causes of blemishes are basically the same in both places (face and back), the skin on your face is very different from the skin on your back. The skin on the back is thicker than the skin on the face which means the back is more resilient, can handle stronger treatments and exfoliants that would be considered too harsh for the face.

Here are some of my favorite products that are more specialized and easy to use.

  • Biologique Recherche P50 Corps – the gentle retexturizing formula is great for eradicating pores, smoothing away rough patches, and boosting hydration levels. It balances skin PH and regulates oil production,-perfect for treating your back and the whole body.
  • Gounjae Charcoal Sulfur Soap – amazing handcrafted  bar soap from South Korea. Charcoal sulfur soap targets oily and troubled skin.
  • Environ B-Active Sebuwash Cleanser – a foaming, gel cleanser that gently removes excess oils and environmental debris without drying the skin. Great for oily, problematic and congested skins and with the help of Tea Tree oil and Salicilic Acid it’s perfect for combating stubborn blemishes on your body.
  • Environ Multivitamin Body Moisturiser – with high concentration of Vitamin A, C and E and antioxidants, leaves skin revitalized, radiant, even toned and smooth.
  • Environ Dermalac Lotion – contains AHAs for use on rough, congested skin.

Tools:

  • Baudelaire Cedar Bath Brush – perfect,100% boar-bristles whole body brush that stimulates circulation and speeds up acne healing.
  • Morihata Binchotan Charcoal Body Scrub Towel – removes toxins and excess oil and leaves the skin revitalized and refreshed.
  • Aquis Exfoliating Back Scrubber – helps improve skin texture and reduces bacne. It deep cleans and polishes that hard to reach back side, improves circulation and skin tone, all while removing impurities.
  • Lightstim for Acne – soothes, heals and prevents new acne from forming while healing existing breakouts.

Quick Lifestyle Tips:

  • The shorter the time between exercising and showering, the better for your skin. No shower access, no problem. Sensibio H2O Wipes by Bioderma are awesome for cleansing on the go.
  • Wear loose, breathable, clean clothes.
  • Use mild, fragrance-free detergents.
  • Clean up your diet and remember to hydrate.

A combination of these products and tools will leave bacne no chance!

Cheers to clear skin,

Diana Yerkes

Beauty Spring Clean

beauty-spring-cleaningWhen was the last time you checked the expiration date of your sunscreen? How about your favorite mascara? Like most things in life, beauty products don’t last forever, and as you are going through and sprucing up your home for new season, why not take the time and spring clean your cosmetics?

Here Are My Basic Guidelines:

1. PAY ATTENTION TO PAO DATE

PAO stands for Period After Opening. It looks like a picture of a jar with a number next to it. The letter M stands for months and the number for how many months the product is good after opening.

expiration-symbol

2. TRUST YOUR SENSES

Trust your own eyes and nose when it comes to any strange smelling or odd looking foundation, lipstick or really any cosmetic product for that matter. Throw away anything that has changed in color, smell or texture.

3. KNOW THE BASIC SHELF LIFE RULE

In addition to losing their effectiveness, some expired beauty products can cause irritation or other problems. Here are some of the more common products and their typical lifespans:

Moisturizer and eye cream: 6 months to a year
Cleanser: up to 1 year
Toner: 6 months to 1 year
Sunscreen: 6 months to a year
Creams and serums with antioxidants and retinoids: 2 to 9 months
Organic products: 4 to 6 months

Tip: Products in pump bottles tend to last longer

Mascara (regular or waterproof), liquid or gel eyeliners: 4 to 6 months
Cream, Liquid or Stick Foundations: 6 months to 1 year
Powder-based products (including mineral makeup): 2-3 years
Lipsticks, Lip Gloss, & Lip Pencils: 2-3 years

TIP: Don’t pump your mascara and do not add water to your cosmetics to make them last longer! Do sharpen your lip or eye pencils before each use to get rid of the bacteria.

4. STORE YOUR COSMETICS PROPERLY

To make your favorite items last as long as possible, keep them away from humidity, heat, air and sunlight. The most common mistake is to keep your products “safe” in the bathroom medicine cabinet. That is so wrong! Products stored that close to the shower and in humidity tend to spoil sooner. I find that designating an area for a vanity is very exciting and storing your products in a vanity drawer is a MUST.

5. MAKE SPACE FOR THE NEW

We all share a tendency to collect too much make up or skin care. I definitely am guilty of this and belong in the second category. I find it gratifying to go through my possessions and find items my friends and family can benefit from, thus making space for much more needed or craved new item.

6. UPGRADE TO A SUMMER FORMULA

With hotter months upon us, it is beneficial to switch to a lighter product formula. I tend to swap my favorite Dermopurifiante for lighter Emulsion Biosensible S.R., and upgrade my SPF from Environ SPF25 to a Jan Marini SPF45.

7. DON’T SHARE YOUR PRODUCTS WITH OTHERS

We all know that sharing is caring but in order to avoid infections, it’s best to keep your beauty products to yourself.

The awakening of spring brings an awareness of a new season and I hope this article has inspired you to freshen up your beauty stash and move forward more confident and informed.

Diana Yerkes

A Few of Monika Kozlowska’s Favorite Things

monika_k_blog_2016

Monika Kozlowska – Rescue Spa Aesthetician

Just as the skin has many different layers so does my beloved skincare regimen, as each one serves different values to your skin.  Biologique Recherche products allow each individual to create a unique program for their personal best skin.

My recommended five step regimen starts with a cleansing milk such as Lait U to cleanse, hydrate and balance your skin.

Second? Lotion P50 Original “1970 toner… a treatment in itself!  Well known as a“facial in a bottle” it tops the charts in terms of a product that does it all.  The phenol is antibacterial and balancing, the salicylic acid gently exfoliates your skin, and the lactic acid hydrates.  Seriously, a perfect combination!  After the first use, your skin will be glowing and pH balanced which is so important in order to keep the skin’s natural barrier and protection healthy.

Third. Here come the Quintessential Serums (one for each skin type)!  They are all water based with active amino acids or peptides meant to treat skin imbalances.  Use them after  P50, they penetrate quickly and set your skin for the final step: Moisturizer.

Last but not least BR offers the most sophisticated finishing serums which provide instant and long lasting effects.  They are formulated with botanical extracts, antioxidants, hyaluronic acid,  as well as potent moisturizing and oxygenating DNA extracts.  They can be applied both under or over moisturizer for a radiant and natural finish.  Finishing Serums aren’t to be overlooked, they prolong and protect the effects of your entire skincare regimen.  *They also create a great makeup base.

There is technically one more step worth mentioning … Sunscreen.  Yes, it should be applied separately because every well-respected line keeps SPF separate from their creams in order to maintain the benefits of the active ingredients in both products.

FOR FACE…

Micro Facial –  ($160)  We all know that applying and reapplying sunscreen in the summer is non-negotiable.  However, the “summer gunk” that SPF’s leave behind can take a toll on our skin.

Enter Mini Micro.   ($75)  Deep cleans the pores and diminishes fine lines without downtime.  Win win!  *Use Dr.Dennis Gross Skincare Medi Spa Peels 1 x a week as maintenance in between facials.

Brow & Lash Tint (Brow $25 – Lash $30)  It is just too hot and humid to worry about your makeup.  Allow tinting to enhance your features without all the work.  Beyond waterproof, your brows and lashes will appear natural yet thicker and more defined for days.  *Don’t forget to schedule designer brows for the most enviable arches.

FOR HANDS…

Bioseaweed Gel Nails – ($45 manicure only)  All of the pros of gel nails with none of the cons? Yes, please!  Perfect to get before your next getaway as it lasts approximately 2 weeks.  Does NOT contain the 5 notorious chemicals found in traditional gels.  Nails are set with LED Light, unlike traditional gel which uses damaging UV rays. You can also look forward to an upgraded and comfortable steam removal!

FOR HAIR…

Summer Hair –  ($40 and up)  Frizz. The struggle is real.  Maintain your sanity by scheduling an appointment for aGlaze and Blowout.  You’ll leave with silky smooth hair that shines and defies humidity. *Calling all balayaged, bottle blondes, platinum, and silver hair…  Davines Silver Alchemy Conditioner is a summer must-have to stave away brassiness. Use 1 x a week to maintain the perfect color.

FOR BODY…

Brazilian & Bikini – (Brazilian $50 – Bikini $30)  The best way to get beach ready in an instant!  *Opt for Fur Stubble Cream daily to keep ingrown hairs at bay.

Lift & Sculpt – (60 min – $125 )  If you’re searching for a next level bikini body boost, look no further. This whole body treatment stimulates, exfoliates, tones, and firms like no other.  *At home we recommend massaging Lotion P50 Corps all over the entire body with Biologique Recherche’s Body Glove, excellent for toning, exfoliation, and stimulation.  Follow with a moisturizer such as Crème Reparatrice, which is exceptionally firming.  *Don’t forget to apply sun block on all areas exposed to the sun.

Velashape III –  (per consultation)  The answer for those looking to tighten up stubborn areas such as the buttocks, thighs, back of arms, and tummy.  Results vary but typically can be seen in as little as 3-6 sessions.  *Reach forBiologique Recherche’s Creme Anti-C for areas prone to cellulite.
