The Double Duty Product Diana Loves

“I never thought this masque would be suitable for oil-prone skin at my age, but, recently, I was pleasantly surprised to discover other wise. In this post I would like to focus on the benefits of adding this masque creme to a regimen.”

Masque Creme Biofixine is one of the earliest products from the Biologique Recherche line, a lifting and brightening masque that can be used in so many ways! I never thought this masque would be suitable for oil-prone skin at my age, but, recently, I was pleasantly surprised to discover other wise. In this post I would like to focus on the benefits of adding this masque creme to a regimen.

Biologique Recherche Masque Creme Biofixine is a toning anti-wrinkle treatment, both a mask and a cream. It is an innovative multifunctional product that tones and smoothes the epidermis, improves skin elasticity, helps unify the texture of the skin and prevent visible signs of aging. It features a re-plumping effect and leaves the skin feeling wonderfully soothed. The grape seed oil and green anise extract help fight free radicals while the white clay purifies. This BR oxygenating complex brings life back to your skin.

Here’s how I use it as a masque: After cleansing my face with the Lait Vip O2 and a thorough application of P50 1970, I follow up with an MC110 booster in the areas that need some extra attention. I prefer to apply the Masque Creme Biofixine all over my face, neck and décolletage in a thin layer and let it work it’s magic! 20-30 minutes should be sufficient. Then I remove it with a damp cloth and follow up with Fluide VIPO2 for more glowing skin. Before an event or after a long night out, I recommend leaving the masque on for up to 2 hours for extra purifying and plumping benefits.

Here’s how to use it as a cream: Application is the same as above but this time I make sure to apply a very thin layer on and massage it upwards until it is completely absorbed. The next morning, my skin is visibly brighter, smoother and awake! I like to use Masque Creme Biofixine as a cream after a grueling and exhausting day or a long-haul flight. You should try it this way too!

Masque Creme Biofixine is on the pricier side of products, but, in my opinion, it is worth every penny! Try it for yourself and discover why I consider this masque a favorite and call it the best route to beautiful and glowing skin!

Body Acne and How to Treat It

back-ink-drawing-02

dealing with acne on your body…

~

It’s already hard enough when you have to deal with acne on your face, but dealing with acne on your body is another story.

For some of us, skin breakouts can be more far reaching than the face, influencing bigger territories of the body. It normally happens on the back, midsection, neck, shoulders, and upper arms. We spend most of our AM and PM skincare regmen concentrating on the face, neck and décolletage. It is time we start paying attention to our back and work on getting the skin on our back “summer-ready”.

Back acne, simply called bacne, can be very hard to fix. There are a lot of products that are acne fighting and work really really well on the face, but your back does not respond as well to them. Even though the root causes of blemishes are basically the same in both places (face and back), the skin on your face is very different from the skin on your back. The skin on the back is thicker than the skin on the face which means the back is more resilient, can handle stronger treatments and exfoliants that would be considered too harsh for the face.

Here are some of my favorite products that are more specialized and easy to use.

  • Biologique Recherche P50 Corps – the gentle retexturizing formula is great for eradicating pores, smoothing away rough patches, and boosting hydration levels. It balances skin PH and regulates oil production,-perfect for treating your back and the whole body.
  • Gounjae Charcoal Sulfur Soap – amazing handcrafted  bar soap from South Korea. Charcoal sulfur soap targets oily and troubled skin.
  • Environ B-Active Sebuwash Cleanser – a foaming, gel cleanser that gently removes excess oils and environmental debris without drying the skin. Great for oily, problematic and congested skins and with the help of Tea Tree oil and Salicilic Acid it’s perfect for combating stubborn blemishes on your body.
  • Environ Multivitamin Body Moisturiser – with high concentration of Vitamin A, C and E and antioxidants, leaves skin revitalized, radiant, even toned and smooth.
  • Environ Dermalac Lotion – contains AHAs for use on rough, congested skin.

Tools:

  • Baudelaire Cedar Bath Brush – perfect,100% boar-bristles whole body brush that stimulates circulation and speeds up acne healing.
  • Morihata Binchotan Charcoal Body Scrub Towel – removes toxins and excess oil and leaves the skin revitalized and refreshed.
  • Aquis Exfoliating Back Scrubber – helps improve skin texture and reduces bacne. It deep cleans and polishes that hard to reach back side, improves circulation and skin tone, all while removing impurities.
  • Lightstim for Acne – soothes, heals and prevents new acne from forming while healing existing breakouts.

Quick Lifestyle Tips:

  • The shorter the time between exercising and showering, the better for your skin. No shower access, no problem. Sensibio H2O Wipes by Bioderma are awesome for cleansing on the go.
  • Wear loose, breathable, clean clothes.
  • Use mild, fragrance-free detergents.
  • Clean up your diet and remember to hydrate.

A combination of these products and tools will leave bacne no chance!

Cheers to clear skin,

Diana Yerkes

Beauty Spring Clean

beauty-spring-cleaningWhen was the last time you checked the expiration date of your sunscreen? How about your favorite mascara? Like most things in life, beauty products don’t last forever, and as you are going through and sprucing up your home for new season, why not take the time and spring clean your cosmetics?

Here Are My Basic Guidelines:

1. PAY ATTENTION TO PAO DATE

PAO stands for Period After Opening. It looks like a picture of a jar with a number next to it. The letter M stands for months and the number for how many months the product is good after opening.

expiration-symbol

2. TRUST YOUR SENSES

Trust your own eyes and nose when it comes to any strange smelling or odd looking foundation, lipstick or really any cosmetic product for that matter. Throw away anything that has changed in color, smell or texture.

3. KNOW THE BASIC SHELF LIFE RULE

In addition to losing their effectiveness, some expired beauty products can cause irritation or other problems. Here are some of the more common products and their typical lifespans:

Moisturizer and eye cream: 6 months to a year
Cleanser: up to 1 year
Toner: 6 months to 1 year
Sunscreen: 6 months to a year
Creams and serums with antioxidants and retinoids: 2 to 9 months
Organic products: 4 to 6 months

Tip: Products in pump bottles tend to last longer

Mascara (regular or waterproof), liquid or gel eyeliners: 4 to 6 months
Cream, Liquid or Stick Foundations: 6 months to 1 year
Powder-based products (including mineral makeup): 2-3 years
Lipsticks, Lip Gloss, & Lip Pencils: 2-3 years

TIP: Don’t pump your mascara and do not add water to your cosmetics to make them last longer! Do sharpen your lip or eye pencils before each use to get rid of the bacteria.

4. STORE YOUR COSMETICS PROPERLY

To make your favorite items last as long as possible, keep them away from humidity, heat, air and sunlight. The most common mistake is to keep your products “safe” in the bathroom medicine cabinet. That is so wrong! Products stored that close to the shower and in humidity tend to spoil sooner. I find that designating an area for a vanity is very exciting and storing your products in a vanity drawer is a MUST.

5. MAKE SPACE FOR THE NEW

We all share a tendency to collect too much make up or skin care. I definitely am guilty of this and belong in the second category. I find it gratifying to go through my possessions and find items my friends and family can benefit from, thus making space for much more needed or craved new item.

6. UPGRADE TO A SUMMER FORMULA

With hotter months upon us, it is beneficial to switch to a lighter product formula. I tend to swap my favorite Dermopurifiante for lighter Emulsion Biosensible S.R., and upgrade my SPF from Environ SPF25 to a Jan Marini SPF45.

7. DON’T SHARE YOUR PRODUCTS WITH OTHERS

We all know that sharing is caring but in order to avoid infections, it’s best to keep your beauty products to yourself.

The awakening of spring brings an awareness of a new season and I hope this article has inspired you to freshen up your beauty stash and move forward more confident and informed.

How The Estheticians Do It: Jet Set Ready…

diana-jet-set-900x600

✈️  jet set ready  ✈️

by Diana Yerkes

I have been extremely lucky to continuously feed my passion for travel and I enjoy sharing stories from my adventures with the clients. One question that always comes up is how do I manage to keep my skin looking good and healthy while traveling. In this post, I would like to share my skincare secrets catered to frequent travelers’ needs.

When traveling, the skin can become rather dehydrated and flaky, not to mention that added stress associated with travel interrupts normal skin’s functions and leads to stubborn breakouts. To avoid that, my first tip is to always prepare your skin the night before.

STEP ONE: PREP

Treat yourself to a balancing masque such as Vivant by Biologique Recherche and apply an intense moisturizer to soothe and condition the skin. My moisturizer of choice is Dermopurifiante for its restorative and purifying properties.

STEP TWO: GO EASY ON MAKE UP

I advise to always travel with thoroughly clean and moisturized skin. Makeup is a no-go unless you are a fan of nasty breakouts.

STEP THREE: “BUILD YOUR OWN” SKIN EMERGENCY KIT

Travel smart with your skincare must-haves on hand. These are the products that I need to have in my kit at all times:

STEP FOUR: BE EFFICIENT EN ROUTE

  • Keep your skin and your body hydrated.
  • Moisturize before the take-off and freshen up your skin with every hour while in flight. L’eauxygenate.
  • Opt up for mineral water in lieu of a tropical cocktail.
  • Apply lip treatment liberally. 3LAB Perfect Lips offers intense and long-lasting hydration and it is my lip balm of choice.
  • Don’t forget your hands! Slather on hand cream such as Lippman Collection Rich Girl SPF25 for instant hydration and sun spots protection wile high in altitude and more exposed to damaging sun rays.

STEP FIVE: WAKE UP YOUR SKIN

Upon arrival, it is good to give your skin a thorough but gentle cleanse. I use Lait VIP O2 with a soft washcloth and I prefer to cleanse twice. Follow up with a thorough application of P50 1970 and a masque of your choice for 15-20 min. I choose to use a combination of Vivant with VIP O2 all over my face when I feel that my skin needs purifying. If flakiness/dullness is an issue, a massaging masque to improve microcirculation, such as Prime Renewing Pack by Valmont, is a life saver! Tip: Leave it overnight for an instant beauty boost.

 STEP SIX: ADDRESS THE EYES

As a result of a long haul flight, we are left with puffy and tired looking eyes. I suggest to use eye contour gel masques, such Gold Energizing Eye Recovery Mask by Chantecaille or Cellcollagen Eye Treatment Mask by Cellcosmet,-it acts as an automatic wake up call.

STEP SEVEN: UNLEASH THE EXPLORER INSIDE YOU

Get out there and build on your experiences, try new things and be adventurous!

There you have it- with these simple steps you can arrive at your destination and enjoy your vacation with beautiful, glowing and well-rested skin!

Cheers to the adventurer in all of us,

 Diana Yerkes

How The Estheticians Do It: Beauty Sleep

tumblr_mi2471va3e1s5cu9oo1_500

beauty sleep ~ by Diana Yerkes

We all are familiar with the #wokeuplikethis selfie trend that took the internet by storm. How do celebrities and people alike look so radiant first thing in the morning? Is it possible? Maybe it’s all photoshop and Instagram filters, but I am here to let you in on a little secret of how to look glowing first thing in the morning.

The way you look in the morning depends on how many zzz’s you got the night before. Most medical professionals recommend 6-8 hours of restful sleep to feel and look great the next morning. While you sleep, your body and skin restores and regenerates, and that is one of the primary reasons to take care of your skin before you get to bed.

That being said, what you do prior to getting to bed is also very important. Here are my evening skin care routine steps:

•    I try  to  cleanse my face as soon as I get home. This assures a good start to my “evening at home” and gives my skin a break from daily make up. I like to use Gounjae Organic Lemon Deep Cleansing to remove my make up, followed by Lait VIP O2 to cleanse my skin. I prefer to use a simple wash cloth as my cleansing tool.

•    Evening time is when I give my skin as much TLC as I possibly can. I like to concentrate on more thorough P50 1970 application and either do a masque or a booster such as Lotion MC110 N°1. My go-to masque combo is Vivant and VipO2, both by Biologique Recherche. On the days my skin looks tired, I spend about 10 minutes massaging my face with soothing, plumping and hydrating Renewing Pack by Valmont. If you are interested in masquing process, read my post about multi-masking. A lot of my clients are curious how one finds time for a masque treatment. I always say, time is not an excuse, time is what you make of it. I can go around prepping my dinner or doing household chores with the masque on my face still knowing I am working on improving my skin. At the end of the day, multi-tasking is essential for our busy lifestyle and addresses most skins concerns. I strongly encourage you to find the time for the things that are important to you and your health.

•    I am passionate about serums! In my opinion, serums are most important when it comes to taking care of your skin. Depending on the concern, serums can be very versatile. I like to use Biologique Recherche Renovateur 14 and Complexe Royal together and layer Silk Plus over my Dermopurifiante moisturizer as a finishing serum. Now you finally begin to imagine the glow one wakes up to with that combination!

•    A couple of times a week I take time to roll my face with the Environ Roll-Cit. This simple procedure takes about 5 minutes and restores skin tightness, reduces pigmentation, smoothes fine lines while boosting product penetration by about 80%. Just imagine how much more effective your serums and peptide-based products are when you deliver it to the areas that need it most! On the nights I roll, I enjoy using Avance DFP 312 cream mixed with AVST 5 and C-Boost,-all by Environ.

•    Your body is also in need of some TLC. Take a relaxing bubble bath! I love using the Santa Maria Novella body line, Bagnoschiuma Alghe Marine bath foam with seaweed extracts is one of my favorites and after the bath I prefer using  Latte Corpo Melograno – moisturizing and refreshing body milk with a signature Melograno aroma- for soft and supple skin.

Lifestyle suggestion: try to skip a heavy dinner too close to your bedtime and opt out for a light, healthy snack and a cup of calming tea. Give your digestive system a break and wake up less bloated and more energized. Taking a 15 minute walk outside or doing a mild exercise routine can also induce a more restful sleep.

Last but not least, try to disconnect from all of the tech devices at least an hour prior to sleep time. Give your eyes a break from all the bright screens and read your favorite book instead or catch up on all the latest fashions in magazine articles. For those who keep a diary, I enjoy and recommend the Happiness Journal concept for setting intentions or to simply write down your daily thoughts, reflect on the day and plan for a better tomorrow.

I really hope this inspires you to take better care of yourself and your skin at night time! I encourage you to try and give your skin more of the TLC it deserves and carve out time for it. Better off, take on the #iwokeuplikethis trend yourself and watch your skin improve day after day.

Wishing you restful sleep for the skin of your dreams,

Diana Yerkes

Prevention: The Importance of Sun Protection

sunglasses (2)

As it’s getting warmer outside, our skin is becoming a lot more vulnerable to the sun. During this time of year, my goal as a beauty professional is to educate every single client on the importance of sun protection and raise awareness around skin cancer.

In case you didn’t know, here are some of the major benefits of SPF:

1. Studies show sunscreen decreases the development of skin cancer

2. It helps to prevent hyperpigmentation and reduces blotchiness

3. Sunscreen slows down the development of premature aging skin (I may not have enjoyed the cloudy Seattle weather, but living there, I learned one big beauty lesson: sun damage is the biggest contributor.

It is important to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB radiation. Ultraviolet A causes premature aging and wrinkling of the skin and ultraviolet B is linked to the development of skin cancer and melanoma. These are some of the reasons to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects both from UVA and UVB rays. I prefer physical sunscreens (also called mineral sunscreens) that contain Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. These provide some of the most comprehensive coverage and work by deflecting the sun radiation from your skin and are often referred to as physical blockers.

Chemical sunscreens are wildly available to consumers as well with Avobenzone, Oxybenzone and Homosalate as some of the most common ingredients. Chemical sunscreens act as absorbers and create a chemical reaction and work by changing UV rays into heat and releasing that heat from the skin.

Physical sunscreens offer protection against both rays and protect from the sun as soon as it’s applied, last longer in direct UV light and are less likely to clog the pores. Chemical sunscreens tend to be much thinner and with such a formula it’s easier to add additional treatment ingredients such as peptides and enzymes. It is up to you as a consumer to pick the one that works best for your lifestyle.

Regardless of your choice, here are some of my favorites:

Other sun protection tips to remember:

  • Protect your lips by using lip balm or lipstick that contains SPF 30 or higher
  • Reapply sunscreen to your entire body every 2 hours if out in the sun
  • Wear sunglasses with 100% UV absorption to protect your eyes and the surrounding skin
  • Limit your sun exposure between 10AM and 4PM
  • Do not use tanning beds

Enjoy the sun responsibly,

Diana Yerkes

AVST range gives skin exactly what it needs…

DIANA

Environ is a globally recognized professional skincare brand that is built on science. It originated in South Africa and was created by a plastic surgeon who passionately believes in using vitamin A to maintain healthy skin. “Environ skin care products have been formulated to combat and relieve the harmful effects of today’s harsh environmental changes, specifically pollution and ever-increasing doses of radiation from the sun due to the thinning of the protective ozone layer. Added to these are the modern-day effects of social and work stresses and poor diet.”

Having to work with so many vitamin A based products, I truly have fallen in love with the Environ AVST step up system, and I believe, unlike most modern days Retinol and Retin-A products on the market, AVST is gentle enough to introduce to clients with all skin types and conditions ranging from sensitive skin and even rosacea to combo/oily/acneic skin types.

The AVST range gives skin exactly what it needs because of its scientifically researched combination of vitamins A, C, E and antioxidants including rooibos tea, honeybush and specially selected peptides.  The step up system helps your skin to become gradually more comfortable by increasing the levels of vitamin A and peptides.  You don’t have to be extra careful with it and it will not make you super dry, flaky or sun sensitive like other brands’ vitamin A products.  You should use it every night as a moisturizer comfortably but I still would wear a sunscreen every day because simply put it’s a must in my routine and it should be in yours too.

Vitamin A is the only known element that keeps skin healthy and combats aging. It has proven to have the following benefits:

  • Promote the skin’s natural moisturizing factor and give it a radiant glow.
  • Strengthen the skin’s outer layer to keep it firm.
  • Stimulate the production of natural proteins to keep skin looking healthy.
  • Support the skin’s immune system and helps prevent breakouts.
  • Assists in reducing the development of potential skin cancers.

My skin type is oily and not sensitive so I started on AVST3 and immediately saw a more nourished and radiant skin appearance and a smoother breakout-free skin texture. I love it!  If you are sensitive or have rosacea and any kind of easily induced skin irritation, I would start with AVST1 and let the vitamin A do it’s job. My job is my passion and skin is my playground.  I enjoy educating my clients and answering all the questions and concerns they might have.  Curiosity is highly welcomed in my world.  Schedule an appointment or consultation today and let me be your Rescue skin guru.

“vivanting”

vivant
Vivant means living or alive in French and it’s no surprise why BR selected that name for one of its best performing masques. It’s packed with Yeast and Witch Hazel and is exceptional for purifying, balancing and brightening the skin. Masque Vivant is a regular in my routine and a few times a year I attempt a masque Vivant challenge that I am inviting you to also join!

Here are some quick tips for a successful “vivanting”:

Stay on a schedule. My masque Vivant challenge lasts 7 days; I start on Monday and finish on Sunday. Sticking to a week schedule helps to stay consistent.

Team up with a friend! There’s nothing more fun than sending one another Vivant selfies at night to make sure you both completed the challenge.

Do not stop half way! If you see a breakout or a pimple, do not stop. It’s a sign that your skin is clearing itself from all the impurities.

Keep up with the results. Once the challenge is over and you are left with  the renewed skin, don’t forget to use masque Vivant a few times a week.

Diana Yerkes
