Danuta’s Winter Essentials

It’s important to take special care of your skin in the winter. Here are a few things you can do to keep skin moist and healthy all season long… 

  • Use a humidifier when the air is dry.
  • Put moisturizer and oil on your body immediately after bathing.
    Create a ritual of applying oils like Body Oxygenant followed by MSRH Corps.
  • Wear natural fibers, such as cotton and silk, because they allow your skin to breathe.
  • Cover up when the air is dry, to hold moisture in.
  • Focus on proper nutrition and drinking plenty of water.
  • Avoid things that trigger allergic reactions. Use detergent free of dyes and perfumes.
  • Mature and drier skin types should apply and reapply moisturizer to lock in moisture.
  • Let’s not forget hands (telltale sign of age). Apply hand cream and cuticle oil often.
  • Don’t forget to wear gloves while doing home chores and while outdoors.
  • Practice a good skincare regimen:
  1. Dry skin can happen at any age, but it’s most likely a concern if you’re 50 or older. This is because the glands that make oil for your skin get smaller as you age and produce less.  Many popular soaps and cleansers “clean” your skin by removing oil. This strips the skin, which often causes dryness or breakouts to worsen. At Rescue we always recommend a gentle milky cleanser like Lait VIP o2. Use with a washcloth to buff away dry flaky skin and reveal the fresh skin that lies beneath. Washcloths are super gentle on the skin and most importantly, they don’t cost much. 🙂

  2. Once your skin is properly cleansed it is extremely important to balance the pH of your skin. Our favorite product for this step is Lotion P50 1970.During the winter I personally use P50 1970 at night and P50W in the daytime (this gentler formula is fantastic for winter). *A reminder to the health conscious: all Biologique Recherche products are paraben-free and safe to use.


  3. After you’ve applied P50 follow with a hylarounic acid based serum to keep skin plump, hydrated and, yes, looking younger! Babies are born with a high level of hyaluronic acid, which keeps their skin plump and smooth. Unfortunately, the amount of hyaluronic acid in skin diminishes with age, most significantly after age 40. While it may not be possible to maintain perfectly dewy baby-skin, these serums help to restore the skin’s hyaluronic acid content. Applied topically hyaluronic acid increases hydration, improves elasticity, and reverses free radical damage. All skin types, even oily, will benefit from using hyaluronic acid serum. *For those who get injectables it prolongs the plumping effect.

    LayerWinter skincare is like your winter wardrobe, it’s all about layers! I always layer my serums, starting with the lightest texture and finishing with the thickest. Here is my current mix of serums and creams for daytime: AmniotiqueLe Grand Serum, Yall o2, Creme Dermo RL, and Fluide VIP O2.


  4. Your evening routine is another story. Winter is time to bust out the big game changers like MBR’s liquid surgery serum, followed by MBR Extraordinary Cream. Mind you I’m over 50 and the names alone provide a feel-good-factor (I’ll take liquid surgery anytime, no pain or risk involved).

    For younger gals I suggest Environ’s Cquence 3 serum. It’s packed with peptides, vitamins, and retinol to address antiaging in one simple step.

    I also highly recommend keeping the skin challenged by alternating your regimen every other night. Currently I’m alternating MBR Extraordinary cream with BR Le Grand Creme (*available in January).

    For a dry skin solution I love Vintners Daughter Active Botanical Serum – a clean beauty favorite of celebrities. It has a loyal following for good reason. This cult product is a powerful sustainably crafted oil that delivers skin all the essentials, moisture, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants.

    Valmont Regenera II is another winter staple. It’s a rich cream-balm that solves dry skin, lips, cuticles, patches, etc. Love… love… love!

Since we’ve managed to sidestep yet another winter storm, it’s probably safe to say spring’s officially headed our way. 1) Cleanse
First and foremost, following a skincare regimen is so important for all skin types. Once you get in the routine ,it’s really easy to keep up with! To cleanse, choose a product that does not strip skin or clog pores. Institut Esthederm’s Pure Cleansing Gel is great for anyone.

2) Exfoliate
Use a product with lactic acid in the ingredients list; it’ll allow for gentle exfoliation and gives the skin an unmistakable glow. You’ll find all of your other products will absorb better since that dead layer of skin that usually hangs around will be lifted. For manual exfoliation, use a Clarisonic brush or a clean, warm, wet washcloth to shed dead skin cells each time you cleanse.

3) Mask
The transition from winter to spring can be a bit unpredictable, but if there’s anything we can learn from French women, it’s to take the time to mask! Just 10-20 minutes, up to three times a week is all it takes.

4) Moisturize
It seems counter-intuitive, but even oily skin needs moisturizer. Creme Dermopurifiante is a favorite because it balances and purifies, which is especially great for keeping breakouts few and far between. For severely dehydrated skin or anyone in need of a great anti-aging hydrating cream, Hydra3 Regenetic Cream is fantastic. And never forget to moisturize around your eyes.

5) Protect

Update Your Summer Look

Today’s solstice marks the official beginning of summer! Whether you’re braving the city heat wave or staying down the shore you still want to look your best.  If you already wear a broad spectrum SPF daily and practice a good skincare regimen then your summer beauty routine is going to be a breeze. Here are some pointers to further enhance your natural beauty while beating the heat & humidity…

  1. Ditch the liquid foundations and opt for a little tinted moisturizer with an SPF.  A little goes a long way for a fresh and dewy complexion.  *Try applying with a damp sponge for even coverage.
  2. Try bronzer. The golden tones will give you a healthy looking sun-kissed glow.
  3. Exchange your high definition powder blush for a natural flush with crème blush.
  4. Matte lips can be a bit too dramatic for warmer weather.  Instead try a neutral gloss or brightly colored lip stain.
  5. Heavily concentrated fragrances can quickly become overpowering on hot days.  A lighthearted roll-on perfume like Kai is easy to throw in your bag and smells delightfully fresh.
  6. Smoky eyes are too intense for the beach.  Instead sweep a golden shadow on your lids to keep your look light and modern.
  7. Don’t: succumb to raccoon eyes.  Do: use a waterproof Eyeliner and Mascara
  8. Save your dark nail polish for Fall & Winter.  Nudes, Neons, and Pastels will keep your look updated & cool.
  9. Lightly filling in or enhancing your brows will enable you to wear less makeup and place the emphasis on your eyes.  Comb brows in place with a clear gel or a mousse to keep them in place all day.
  10. Rehydrate & Reapply often.  UV Incellium spray instantly refreshes, hydrates, sets makeup, and adds extra protection with SPF 8.

Love the skin you’re in

Being an esthetician for 20 years I often hear women say “I hate my skin.”  For me there is no such thing as bad skin, yet there is skin that is not taken care of properly and it shows immediately.  It makes me think of Helena Rubenstein’s famous quote “There are no ugly women, only lazy ones.”

On an average day I take care of many faces and every skin type, color, age is unique and magnificent in it’s own way.  But as everything in life there are always things you can improve upon.  I’m endlessly interested in how I can fix or improve a wrinkle, a spot, discoloration, texture, hydration, pore size, etc.  There are many things I can do in my treatment room but the most important thing one can do is to love and take care of your own skin.

February is the best time to start the appropriate skincare regimen.   Make sure you cleanse twice a day, exfoliate, hydrate, moisturize, and protect for the whole month of February faithfully I can assure that you’ll see improvement by March.  If you are in doubt take a picture before and after.  Since February is the month of love… I’m promoting love for yourself and the skin you’re in!

Q: I’m 20 years old, when should I start using anti-aging products?

A: It’s never too early to start, I believe a good skincare regimen is the key to younger, healthier, glowing skin for life. Because it’s easier to prevent than to correct visible signs of aging I encourage everyone to start taking care of their skin now.

-All you babies, teenagers, young adults, and the rest of us make sure to use the most anti-aging product available: broad spectrum sunscreen.

-Practice a good cleansing routine. It will give everyone a great foundation regardless of their age.

-It’s never too early or too late to start hydrating your skin with a facial moisturizer, especially when skin feels dry or tight. We even use baby lotion on babies.

-Anyone over 20 can benefit from a wide range of antioxidants, Vitamin A products (retinol), Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin B, and fruit acids.

Healthy eating and exercise can dramatically improve the way your skin looks so I encourage everyone to eat rich foods in protein, vitamins, omega 3 (salmon, lean meats, nuts, berries, avocados, flax seed) these all have anti aging power.

Danuta’s Tips for a Beautiful Beginning in 2011

Are you stuck in a beauty rut as the new year approaches?  Have you been using the same moisturizer and eye cream forever? It’s time for a change, change is never easy but it’s worth a try.  We all have 2 shampoos and conditioners because we believe we need to switch things up.  Same goes for skincare.  I alternate two or three face creams and eye creams most of the time.  As our skin is forever changing sometimes we need more hydration, I like Regenetic.  Other times we need more treatment, then I go to Retinol and Vitamin C creams by Environ.  If you’re unsure how to make a change please check in for a free consultation with a Rescue aesthetician.  Happy New Year and always remember ‘Beautiful Skin is a matter of choice, not chance.’
