We are all aware of the importance of prepping the skin before going into the sun, but what about what to do after? After sun care is just as important to recuperate your skin after sun exposure. To help us better understand the protocol for proper after sun care, we chatted with Magdalena, one of our Philadelphia Lead Estheticians.
What skincare would you recommend to protect the skin before going in the sun?
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from free radicals, pollution and UV exposure throughout the day. Award winning C E Ferulic Serum is the best choice for aging and dehydrated skin, specifically targeting fine lines, wrinkles and loss of firmness. Super Serum has a powerful blend of botanical antioxidants and L-ascorbic acid to brighten and protect the skin. For those with rosacea or sensitive skin, I would recommend Pro Heal Serum from iS Clinical, an incredible soothing and protecting serum.
Keep in mind that any products containing AHA’s (Alpha hydroxy acids) have been shown to increase UV sensitivity and risk of sun damage. Make sure to use SPF when using those products! I’m a big fan of the Physical Protectant SPF 45, tinted sunscreen from Jan Marini. It is a mineral sunscreen that works well for oily, combination skin leaving a sheer matte finish. For my clients with rosacea/ acne, I recommend Elta MD UV Clear SPF 45, it is great for calming and protecting acne prone skin. For someone with dry skin looking for extra hydration, I would suggest U Beauty Multimodal Defender SPF 30. This next generation treatment protects against UVA, UVB, IR (infrared), and HEV blue light exposure.
The best after sun products?
If you are looking for immediate relief from a sunburn apply the iS Clinical Hydra Cool Serum with the Hydra-Intensive Cooling Masque. The Hydra Cool Serum contains Pantothenic acid which will help to hydrate and heal the skin. The Hydra Intensive Cooling Mask has Aloe Leaf Oil to calm the skin and promote collagen synthesis. A power duo! Don’t forget to use a gentle cleanser if you have sunburn! I personally love Cerabalm, a clean-beauty multipurpose balm that calms and nurtures the skin. If you are looking for products to keep in your beach bag, the Phyto Corrective Essence Mist is a great option. This hydrating facial mist can be used as a toner and be reapplied all throughout the day, it immediately reduces visible redness and leaves the skin hydrated.
Are there any treatments to help sunburned skin?
When you get too much sun, you can still get a facial! The IonixLight treatment is a great option for post-sun skin since it includes Oxygen therapy to cool down the skin’s temperature, Red Light with Negative Ions to speed up the healing and recovery process and BioSonix Ultrasound Therapy. Specialized products are used to penetrate active ingredients deep into the skin and can be followed by a Cold Seaweed Mask to provide anti-inflammatory actives. This combination of modalities feels amazing on irritated skin!
What if I notice sun damage, are there treatments for that?
There are multiple types of treatment that can help reduce signs of sun damage to achieve younger looking skin. Sun damaged skin can appear as hyperpigmentation (sun spots), melasma, freckles and wrinkles.
One of them is the Moxie laser treatment, a non-ablative fractionated laser that delivers low energy to the skin, designed for all skin tones and types. It is safe for skin with melasma because of its temperature. The Moxie creates micro-damage that stimulates the skin to generate collagen and increase cell turnover.
Another treatment that we are offering at Rescue Spa is Forever Young BBL (BroadBand Light), one of the most effective treatments for sun spots.
BBL uses the power of intense pulse light to deliver results in photorejuvenation therapy. Works best on lighter skin tones.
Secret RF Microneedling is the latest anti-aging technology. Very effective on many skin concerns including post acne scars, deep wrinkles and sun damage! Combining microneedling and Radio Frequency, this technology creates micro-injuries to stimulate the production of collagen, elastin and new skin cells. The Radio Frequency heats the underlying layers causing tightening of the skin through soft tissue coagulation.
