Microcurrent: What is it?

At Rescue Spa, deemed by editors everywhere as the best facial in New York City and Philadelphia, microcurrent plays a key role in the most-requested bio-lift facial. “The use of electric currents stems from physical therapy treatments used to speed up the healing process,” Rescue Spa founder Danuta Mieloch told mindbodygreen. “It assists in better penetration of products, improves facial contour, softens wrinkles—it is literally a workout for your skin and the muscles of the face. It helps you get that natural noninvasive lift that clients keep coming back for.”

How The Estheticians Do It: Micro-currents

About Joanna!

~

Does your skincare regimen currently include micro-current? If not, then I recommend that it should.

A professional micro-current machine is one of my most used skincare tools, both in the treatment room and at home. My clients are always amazed at the results.

Treating the skin with micro-current is like giving it new energy and life – think extreme yoga for your face. It’s a natural way to treat the signs of aging and promote active skin regeneration for truly lasting results, not to mention the immediate lifting effect.

If you’ve experienced our signature Bio-Lift Facial, you know what I’m talking about.

Luckily, there’s a way to get the benefits of this technology at home with two of my favorite personal micro-current devices available at Rescue Spa.

Let’s start with:

The ReFa CARAT

The cutting-edge technology of the ReFa CARAT beauty roller uses a built-in solar panel to generate a mild electric current that’s similar to what our body produces naturally. Its platinum-coated design and the smooth gliding motion is a testament to fine Japanese craftsmanship and quality.

The award-winning ReFa CARAT is available in different sizes to fit the face, body and delicate eye area. My clients love the ReFa CARAT S. It’s the brand’s smallest device and fits perfectly around eyes, lips and between the brows.

How to use the ReFa CARAT?

You have the option to use the device as is, over makeup, or with your favorite serums. Simply roll the device back and forth, following the direction of the muscle and allow the gentle current to work its magic. You’ll notice an immediate glow from increased circulation and drainage of lymphatic fluids.

Try it with a hyaluronic-acid based serum for maximum hydration and plumping such as Valmont Moisturizing Booster or Biologique Recherche Serum Yall-O2.

Another great advantage of the ReFa CARAT is its portability, making it a perfect little companion on your travels. You can even keep one at your desk for a quick and easy “lunchtime lift.” And since it captures solar or artificial light, it’ll never lose its charge. (ReFa CARAT is available for purchase in spa or by telephone at 215-772-2766 extension #3.)

Next up:

The NuFace Trinity Pro Facial Trainer

You’ve probably seen the NuFace device before, but this Pro version is as close to professional strength micro-current as you can get at home, and it requires only five minutes a day for a full facial workout. The stimulating current works by passively exercising the muscle to lift, tone and tighten, while oxygenating the skin and increasing circulation.

How to use the NuFace Trinity Pro?

The NuFace must be used with a conducting medium such as a gel or water-based serum.

STEP 1: Apply your gel. I recommend the NuFace 24K Gold Primer. It contains gold particles with either a brightening or firming complex to boost skin’s overall radiance and elasticity.

Tip: For sensitive or acne-prone skin, I’d go with something gentler such us the Santa Maria Novella Aloe Gel Viso Corpo as a substitute. It will calm, soothe and help to reduce inflammation.

STEP 2: Turn on the device and hold it for a few seconds, focusing on individual muscle groups. You’ll hear a “beep” when it’s time to move to another area.

Tip: Use oxygenating water to re-wet the skin and keep the gel from drying out. I love Biologique Recherche L’Eauxygenante spray for a dose of oxygen and powerful antioxidants.

STEP 3: Remove gel and apply your treatment products.

Although the NuFace is FDA cleared for facial toning, it may also help reduce breakouts due to electric current’s natural anti-bacterial properties. I generally see an immediate reduction in redness and swelling when I use it on problem areas.

Almost anyone can benefit from micro-current and while nothing comes close to the results of a professional Bio-Lift facial, a micro-current device such as the NuFace Pro or ReFa CARAT can help you maintain those fabulous results longer.

So schedule a Bio-Lift facial and don’t forget to give your skin a regular dose of micro-current at home.

Once you try it, I promise you’ll be hooked!

RESCUE ME

ryall2015spa

Via Travel Industry Today 15 NOV 2016:
This month is the 40th anniversary of the first “Rocky” movie created and starred in by Sylvester Stallone. Back in 1976, Rocky was too busy working out and securing a boxing title to care about how his face looked or if his battle worn hands and nails used for punching opponents could use a good buff or his feet a soothing soak and clip. Rescue Spa in Philadelphia can provide some welcome relief to both Rocky and I and our aging bodies.

Stallone, now 70 years old, amazing still maintains his macho physique and persona. Despite his machismo he probably wouldn’t be averse to a little self-preservation of the facial and mani-pedi kind.

On a recent trip to Philadelphia while visiting various attractions and filling my tummy with culinary delights like cheesesteaks (hold the cheese please), pretzels, tomato pie and spicy Mexican dishes, I dedicated some time for a spa escape. With the colder and drier weather approaching and a rash of sleepless nights, the face was looking a little like Rocky after a few rounds – just not as battered and bloody but definitely puffy.

Unfortunately the ravages of age do occur as I’m in the boomer stage of life. Rescue Spa, opened in Philadelphia in 2004 in Center City (what Philly calls downtown). Its central location attracts visitors and locals alike. Located on the 3rd floor of an office building on Walnut Street, the 7,500 square foot spa has added space as the demand and clientele grows and plans to open up another spa in New York in 2017.

The facility features ten treatment rooms for body and facial treatments, infrared saunas, brow room, hair salon, steam room, locker rooms, nail lounge, relaxation lounge, beauty boutique and cafe bar.

Polish born owner Danuta Mieloch explains her philosophy on skincare and why she opened up Rescue Spa. “For the first half of your life you get the skin you were born with but for the second half, you get the skin you deserve. I created Rescue to help you get what you deserve: healthy, glowing, radiant skin. Because beautiful skin is a matter of choice, not chance.”

Mieloch and many of the staff walk the talk as it looks like they have not left silky smooth skin to chance. There was much beauty in this eye of the beholder!

The spa’s atmosphere is a blend of airy casual elegance with its bespoke furniture and eclectic wall art. The gray toned flooring and walls provide a sophisticated and gender-neutral feel. With the exception of the boutique area filled with a variety of skincare products overall the spa is welcoming to male clientele. As a guy it is refreshing not to be bombarded in the relaxation lounge by the latest issues of Cosmopolitan, Glamour, Allure, Redbook and more and not one male-oriented magazine. Instead in the lounge’s warm confines, there are comfy chairs where you can unwind with an erudite collection of books they have featured on a bookshelf while you can sip on tea, fruit or cucumber infused waters.

Mieloch’s Rescue Spa has won many accolades and it is known as the place in Philly for the best facial. Mieloch mixes the old with the new, the science with the holistic.

“We see the face first. It has to last a lifetime,” Mieloch explains. “For me, it’s not simply about skin. Your face is how you present yourself to the world.”

Right now my face is a living and walking billboard telling everyone I need more sleep and need to reduce my everyday stress.

I’m a perfect candidate for their signature Bio Lift Facial. Shannon, my experienced and personable aesthetician greets me with a warm smile and we go into the treatment room. After leaving the room and returning after I change the Q and A begins and she flicks on the powerful probing light to see what facial skin problems lay ahead. She does a thorough analysis: a few blackheads here and there, a bit of rosacea on my chin, skin dryness and puffiness under my eyes – but overall not too bad. Thankfully Shannon held back about my rapidly receding hairline – she’s skilled but not a miracle worker and treating men’s hair loss is not in her repertoire.

The 60-minute Bio-Lift Facial combines many different elements: a deep cleansing, extractions (fun, wow), exfoliation, lifting facial massage, application of masks and serums. Ingredients are determined depending on your skin type. They add the most advanced technology of non-invasive electric currents. This helps in the reducing wrinkles, puffiness and droopy eyelids. I’ve been accused of being droopy in my lifetime but not my eyelids. Thankfully since I am careful about the sun, the onslaught of wrinkles is minimal. Puffiness under the eyes? Now that I can claim I have in spades!

Shannon, with her rhythmic hand and finger movements, applies a dizzying array of cleansers, serums, and moisturizers to my face obviously feels passionate about what she does and explains with each application why it helps the skin feel like new again. One of the spa’s biggest sellers is Biologique Recherche Lotion P50. What owner Mieloch describes as, “Like a facial in a bottle.”

Following my facial I venture over to the mani-pedi area. It’s been a while since I’ve had a mani-pedi. The transfer of pampering now rests with Kelly, a bubbly and feisty Italian aesthetician with soft, welcoming hands.

Kelly puts my hands and then my feet at ease with relaxing and soothing soaks. She buffs the nails (no polish necessary!) while we engage in seamless conversations from the US election, skincare, best places to eat and drink in Philly, relationships with our respective loved ones, Canada and how my big toe nails got so discoloured. The fact she didn’t gag when she saw them earned her big points (and a good tip) with me.

Philly has plenty of attractions for you to discover whether it’s on the cultural side with the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Rodin Museum, it’s vibrant culinary scene, urban adventures from river rowing, hiking, mountain biking, or rich history with the Independence Hall and Liberty Bell. But if you are in Philly and in need of getting back some vitality don’t call 911 – just visit Rescue Spa. Take the first step back to good health.

Thanks to Rescue Spa I was now ready to tackle 72 more steps – the famous “Rocky Steps” and “face” the world again.

Mandy Moore on Biologique Recherche via Into The Gloss

“I use Biologique Recherche P50. It smells intense, but it’s supposed to tighten your pores. You can feel it tingle when you dab it on—you’re not supposed to wipe it on. I went to this facialist in the Valley for a few years and she exclusively used Biologique Recherche products. I loved going there because part of her routine was to use these pulsating sponges to help you better absorb the product and to tighten your skin—it makes you look like you’ve had an instant facelift. I stopped using Biologique Recherche for a while, but my skin felt like it was out of balance, so now I’m back on.

I’m at the age where I have to start thinking about the under-eye lines and stuff. I don’t necessarily care about aging—I think aging is beautiful—but I also want to try and maintain things for as long as possible.  When I want to be more dewy, I spray Biologique Recherche Fluide VIP O2 on my hand and then pat it on my face to look extra glowy. It’s apparently supposed to protect your skin from environmental damage.

When I want to do a fun mask, Biologique Recherche Masque VIP O2 is a super yummy, ultra hydrating treatment that’s especially good for under my eyes. I put it on for 10 minutes. None of their products really smell great, but I feel like that’s why they work? [Laughs]

Biologique Recherche Masque Vivant smells like yeast. It’s awful. What you’re supposed to do is mix a little bit of it with baking soda to make this weird foam, and then put the foam all over your face for 15 minutes. It makes you feel so clean; it’s like my pores have been excavated. Frankie told me about the baking soda part. The mask is super emollient and thick, so when you add the baking soda it foams up and becomes light and frothy. Whenever my husband (Ryan Adams) catches me with the mask on, he makes fun of me, like, ‘Oh, I didn’t know you were in [the band] KISS today.’ [Laughs]”

Town & Country: Pre-Wedding Facials that Make a Difference

Stress and late night planning do the skin no favors. Here are the treatments we recommend before you tie the knot.

Biologique Recherche Bio-Lift Facial, Rescue Spa, Philadelphia

Not for the faint of heart, a Biologique Recherche facial is for serious skin care seekers. The focus is less on relaxation and more on making skin look as beautiful as possible with electrocurrents, massage, and a series of masks.
