Threading at Rescue Rittenhouse Spa

Rescue Rittenhouse Spa is thrilled to introduce Threading by technician Maria Gulraiz. Maria is a threading expert who uses her skill to remove unwanted facial hair and sculpt eyebrows into a clean, flattering shape for your face.

If you are not familiar threading is an ancient method of hair removal, a very delicate procedure, making it suitable for even the most sensitive skin. The art of threading may be seen in the gentle and precise twisting of cotton thread which is moved and twisted along the hairs, it is with this motion that the thread traps the hair and lifts it out of the follicle.  Threading is often more effective and less painful than tweezing or waxing; hair re-growth becomes finer and more sparse after regular treatments and the top layers of skin are not peeled or traumatized in the process. It is an excellent option for those who use Retinols or are allergic to wax.

If you have inquiries about this service or would like to schedule an appointment with Maria please feel free to call our spa concierge at 215.772.2766 or email us at

Staff Pick: Dayna Decker Collection

Trendsetting designer Dayna Decker has not just developed mere candles and hand soap for your guest room, but alluring multi-sensory experiences. Her products are absolutely perfect when you to need a mini-escape after a chilly commute home or a bit of atmosphere while away for a romantic rendezvous. Dayna fuses innovation and eco-responsibility to her collections. All bath and body products are animal friendly and free of harsh chemicals such as cringe-worthy parabens. Natural fruit enzymes and wood extracts are used as an alternative to nourish and protect the skin instead of turning you into a walking preservative. I particularly adore the eco-wood wick used in my favorite hand-blown Bardou scented Botanika Chandel. Organic wood is naturally manufactured into a slow burning wick with an intriguing teardrop flame. The botanical wax enriched with wild rose and pink peppercorn essence melts clear creating a peaceful glow. Best of all the wood makes a soft crackling sound as it burns, like a portable fireplace.

Not into candles? The Dayna Decker line also offers handcrafted botanical oil diffusers for those adverse to open flames. The alcohol-free essential oils within the vessel last up to six months in your home or office. Whether you are seeking peace from the madness of everyday or need a bit of luxury in your life the Dayna Decker collection has something for everyone.

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Beginning Monday, February 21, and continuing through Saturday, April 30, urban-chic cocktail lounge and restaurant Liberté (120 South 17th Street, 215-569-8300) at the Sofitel Philadelphia will partner with Rescue Rittenhouse Spa for a Spa Day, featuring:  a 333 calorie or less, three-course lunch or dinner ($48) from Liberté’s new, healthful spa offerings;  a 60-minute Swedish Massage and Salt Scrub at Rescue, the city’s top spa, for the special price of $120 per person;  and complimentary Valet Parking at the Sofitel.

“Whether our guests have managed to stick to their New Year’s resolutions to take better care of themselves or need a little boost to get back on track, our healthful spa menu and exciting partnership with Rescue make it easy for them to care for their minds and bodies,” says General Manager Vincent Vienne.  “And complimentary valet parking makes it a truly stress-free way to indulge.”

The spa menu, with all dishes 135 calories or less, was created by Chef Kevin Levett in collaboration with five other Sofitel chefs from France, Canada and the United States.  To launch the program on February 21, Executive Chef Patrick Jarno from Sofitel Thalassa in Quiberon, France will join Chef Levett in Philadelphia and will be on hand for the entire week.

The three courses include a choice of:  Appetizers:  Salad of Globe Artichoke with fromage blanc and diet mayonnaise (80 calories);  Ravioli of Crab and Celeriac with vegetable julienne and sauce Americain (92 calories);  or Smoked Salmon Papilotte with poached egg and diet sabayon (135 calories);  Entrees:  Sauteed Hen Chicken with braised mushrooms, steamed vegetables and chicken jus (92 calories);  Braised Sea Bass Filet with tomato-fennel compote and balsamic reduction (98 calories);  or Monkfish Casserole with lobster sauce (98 calories);  and Desserts:  Mango Fondant with coconut sorbet (88 calories);  Vanilla Panna Cotta with raspberry coulis (88 calories);  or Sweet Potato and Chocolate Sponge (100 calories).  For those who are not taking part in the Spa Day, the three-course menu is available $48 per person.

Rescue Rittenhouse’s combined 60-Minute Massage and Salt Scrub includes:  a Swedish massage, the timeless style that incorporates long, flowing strokes to encourage relaxation, lymphatic drainage and detoxification;  and a soothing, smoothing body buff that exfoliates and hydrates, hitting all of those hard-to-reach spots for a head-to-toe glow.

Liberté’s new spa menu is inspired by European wellness brand Thalassa Sea & Spa which is owned by Sofitel’s parent company.  Thalassa harnesses the intrinsic healing powers of seawater and promotes balanced nutrition; in a playful twist on their ocean-inspired principles, the spa menu features pristine, fresh seafood and vegetable dishes that are low in calories and ideal for guests looking for a new way to eat well, whether staying at the hotel or living in Center City.

Rescue Rittenhouse is Philadelphia’s premier spa and skin care center.  Owned and operated by Danuta Mieloch, a gifted esthetician with more than 20 years of experience at exclusive spas from New York to Paris, the spa is frequently honored with “Best of” nods from both local and national media, from Allure to InStyle to Frommer’s Travel Guide.  In their 2010 “Best of Philly” issue, Philadelphia magazine

Staff Pick: RapidLash

RapidLash is effective, affordable, safe (safer than Latisse!), and it doesn’t change the color of the pupil. I haven’t experienced any kind of irritation or discomfort while using this product. It’s a $50 solution you can use on both your eyelashes and brows and it’s so easy to incorporate into your nightly routine. I’ve been using this product for a week and I’m already noticing a difference! My lashes are longer, and the lash line even appears fuller.

Why facial massage

During my facials I like to combine Eastern European traditions, new technologies, science, and the luxury of great products and treatments. My main priority is to give each client a facial with the best cleansing, exfoliating, hydrating, rejuvenating and lifting effects on the skin. Today I would like to talk about the effects of specialized massage techniques such as deep muscle lifting, lymphatic drainage, and acupressure. There are over 50 muscles in our face. The same as it is with our body our facial muscles also become weak, so massage brings many benefits to the skin including:

  • Lifting and tightening.
  • Improved circulation and oxygenation.
  • Rehydration of dry skin as massage allows the products to penetrate deeper.
  • Tension relief which creates a relaxing effect. Skin appears fresher and lines & wrinkles smoother.

Don’t be afraid to massage your own face… the face responds particularly well to touch as it is packed with small, sensitive muscles and so richly endowed with endings.

I like to self massage with Renewing Pack by Valmont, a favorite multi-tasking product of mine. It’s a thirst quencher for your skin, non-greasy and great for all skin types.   To begin: apply Renewing Pack generously at the neck, using upward sweeping movements and spending extra time at the jaw line (to prevent sagging).  Next, using the pads of your fingers continue to massage the face with slow circular movements (begin from the chin, moving outwards).

When you reach the eye area use your middle fingers in a counter clockwise motion like you’re tracing large circles around the outer eye area (apply more pressure above the eyebrows and lighter pressure as you move under the eyes). This movement greatly improves dark circles and depuffs the eye area instantly.

Moving along to your forehead continue massaging upwards and outwards toward the temples. Repeat a few times. Finish with acupressure points using a press and release technique. Use the chart below for guidance, practice and have fun doing it!

Maintaining Healthy Feet

Had a long day at work; a stressful week? Why not pamper yourself for 30 minutes? For a quick pick me up, our great new Classic Pedicure includes shaping of the nail, cuticle work, removal of dead skin and calluses, massage, and polish.

Our feet are an essential part of our daily lives and it’s important to take care of them. A pedicure not only benefits the overall appearance of your toes and feet, but over time, can have long lasting health benefits. Coming in for a pedicure on a routine schedule (every 4-6 weeks) prevents ingrown nails, callus build up, cracked heels, and improves the overall appearance of the feet.

To reverse the age of your feet, at home care is essential in between appointments. Cracked heals and calluses can be avoided and cured by maintaining a regular schedule of care. Filing or using pumice on your feet in the shower at least 2 times a week gets rid of dead skin and keeps your heals nice and soft, the Gehwol foot files are fantastic. After filing the feet it is important to keep your feet moisturized. One of my favorite exfoliators is out of our new LaLicious line. The Sugar Kiss Soufflé Scrub is an all natural scrub that contains Coconut Oil, Cane Sugar, Sweet Almond Oil, Essential and Fragrance Oils, Soybean Oil, Vitamin E Oil, and Honey. It’s a refreshing scent of vanilla, citrus and rose. The best part is that is contains NO PARABENS! It’s highly moisturizing and can be used all over the body, including the hands.

Some quick at home tips:

Not only can you use Sugar Kiss Soufflé Scrub as a moisturizing exfoliant you can use it to shave! In the shower rinse the sugar crystals away and you have the perfect opportunity to get the closet shave ever; your legs will be moisturized and silky smooth. It’s the perfect scrub no need for lotion, just get out and go!

Our Gehwol foot file is big enough that it allows you to find the perfect angle on your foot regardless if you are quickly showering or settling in for a relaxing bubble bath.

Hope to see you for a pedicure soon, and be sure to ask about at-home tips to supplement your regular pedicure schedule.
