Ethnic Skin by Vida Colon

As the only Latina aesthetician at Rescue I feel it is my duty to represent skin of color.  Thanks to Dr. Seema Patel, I have 10 years of treating ethnic skin as a Medical Aesthetician.  Most men and women of color are hesitant to try Facials or Laser Treatments for fear of of scarring.  Why? Because of hyperpigmentation.  Yes the dreaded post inflammatory dark scar that remains after trauma has occurred on the skin.  On lighter skin types these scars typically fades over time.  On darker skin types these scars can become permanent.  Let’s do a quick reference on how ethnic skin is defined using the good old Fitzpatrick Skin Type Classification Scale.  This scale measures 2 things, your genetic disposition and your skins reaction to sun exposure.  It ranges from skin type I (Nicole Kidman) to FitzPatrick VI  (Lupita Nyong’o) and since I’m Latina I’m going to throw in Jennifer Lopez Fitzpatrick IV.

Skin Type Reference…

Good news is that the esthetic world is evolving and acknowledging that ethnic skin takes special training and needs a different approach to treating our skin concerns.  Now there are safer lasers to treat unwanted hair on darker skin types and lasers that tighten and contour the skin (Sublime/Refirme) and if you are still nervous you can try theEnergy Lift Facial which is a great intro on the Sublime/Refirme laser treatment.  We also have the Velashape which treats cellulite and tightens the skin.  For those looking to receive a good skin care routine or needs help addressing their skin care concerns, a complimentary consultation can help or simply booking a classic facial so that I can get to know your skin.

Here are some of my favorite products:

For hyperpigmentation (dark marks)

Environ Clarifying Lotion twice a day followed by C-Boost cream (Vitamin C) works well to clarify these areas.

I also love Valmont’s Expert of Light Product Line.  It features Valmont’s Clarifying Infusion Serum it really evens out your skin tone and has Glycolic Acid which helps to smooth and brighten your skin. Valmont’s Clarifying Packis a wonderful cream mask.  Smooth this mask all over your face neck and chest (Avoid eye area) leave on for 10 minutes and you have an instant bright complexion and an awesome glow.

The product I can’t live without is Lotion P50 1970 by Biologique Recherche.  I use this twice a day after cleansing and before I moisturize.  This awesome potion brightens up any skin tone and helps to balance the skin.  It has so many benefits that a Grandmother and Granddaughter can walk out with this in their shopping bag.

Before you snatch these products it is best to get a skin consultation or facial to determine which products are appropriate for your skin.  The beauty of color is that there are so many beautiful shades to represent our heritages.  Let’s keep our skin looking healthy and beautiful!

Au revoir sun damage

expert_of_lighttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt

With summer coming to an official end, many of us look in anticipation to the cool and crisp autumn air. What a refreshing change from months of relentless heat and humidity! It’s as if our skin can finally breathe and take a break from the heavy sunscreen, sweat, and harsh UV rays.

But before we know it, that gorgeous tan will start to fade and the lovely summer glow will have all but disappeared. Our skin will be left with the uneven, dull, freckled look of sun damage, a reminder of all those hours spent laying by the poolside or on the beach. So how do we remedy this situation and get our glowing, healthy skin back?

A great post-summer skin fix is the “Expert of Light” line from Valmont. This beautiful line of products is specifically created to boost radiance and even out the complexion to get your skin looking its best. As the crème de la crème of luxury skincare, Valmont prides itself on the research and ingredients that go into their products and the “Expert of Light” line is nothing short of brilliant. It will regenerate, renew and brighten the complexion, while targeting pigmentation and photo damage to give you that luminous healthy glow back in no time.

Having recently tried these products for myself and on my clients, I can honestly that this whole line is impressive and can definitely hold its own as a complete skincare regimen (in addition to professional treatments, of course.)

A quick breakdown of the products:

Illuminating Foamer:  Start your regimen with this luxurious foaming cleanser either in the AM or PM. The pearly formula is quite gentle on the skin, leaving it feeling soft and silky. Due to zinc NMF (natural moisturizing factor) and niacinamide, this cleanser gives an instant boost of radiance, while helping to target dark spots and uneven skin tone.

Illuminating Toner A gradual exfoliating lotion containing salicylic acid to speed up cell renewal and eliminate surface cells with excess pigment. Used morning and night, this toner will help to gradually fade freckles and dark-spots, while preventing further melanin transfer with the potent ingredient niacinamide. Like its cleanser counterpart, this toner also contains zinc NMF to hydrate, soothe and illuminate the skin.

Clarifying Infusion Brightening Serum and Clarifying Touch PenAn intensive skin-lightening treatment available as an all-over serum or a click- pen for targeted areas and blemish spots. This serum absorbs instantly into the skin and can be used twice a day. (Hint: it’s excellent for under-eyes.) Potent ingredients such as zinc DNA will brighten and fight wrinkles, while hexylresorcinol and niacinamide deliver a one-two punch against melanin production and transfer. In addition, glycolic acid will refine skin texture and further even out the complexion.

Clarifying SurgeA moisturizing cream for all skin types, even oily/combination skin. Armed with zinc DNA, hexylresorcinol and niacinamide, this cream also contains silk tree extract to eliminate toxins that can dull the complexion. The non-greasy formula is perfect for daytime or nighttime, leaving your skin not only ultra smooth, but intensely regenerated and brighter.

Clarifying PackThis mask, used 1-2 times a week and for only 10 minutes, acts as a mildpeel and makes the skin glow for days. It’s equally effective against clogged pores and acne. Papaya extract, glycolic acid and rice starch gently whisk away layers of sun-damaged skin, while niacinamide and hexylresorcinol once again target pigmentation.

To really get your glow on, I recommend reactivating the product with a small amount of Clarifying Toner and massaging it into the skin prior to rinsing off. Follow with Clarifying Infusion and Clarifying Surge for a complete treatment.

Before you know it, it’s “Au revoir” sun damage.

Samantha Lowe’s Fall Skincare Regimen

fall skincare regimenAs the seasons change,  so does my skin care routine.  Lait U and P50 1970 every morning and evening. Valmont face scrub followed by Masque Visolastine E. every 4 days and in between, Masque Vivant. Yes, I do something extra for my skin everyday.  Both masks can stay on for 10-20 minutes. Masking and exfoliating on the same night is a really wonderful way to give your skin the added punch of active ingredients. That’s why P50 1970 should be used daily. Even that slight exfoliation will increase the efficacy of all of your products. I will continue this probably through October.

And that’s just the beginning. The truth is,  after the basic cleanse, exfoliate and tone; hydration, serums and sun protection always baffle clients. In the evening, I think of repairing my skin.  Clarifying Surge from Valmont and Intensive Alpha Hydroxy Cream from Environ alternated for this darn sun damage. I always use Valmont Prime Contour or Factor 3 under my eyes at night. During the day, Factor 2. All from Valmont. Day cream is Creme ADN Elastine Marine Collagene Marin and Complex Royal, layered from BR. Now that fall is truly here, I’m going to modify my daily SPF. The Mineral Spray from Dr. Gross is an SPF 50. Normally I would go down to a 30 but because of my sun damage,  I will be getting a few photo facials in the coming months.
Check back in November to see what winter has in store for my skin!

Hydration: The Essence of Health

I see clients on a daily basis. During the initial consultation I often notice the tell signs of dehydration; dark circles, fine lines, pigmentation and acne are more than skin deep. Great skin is a reflection of what one puts in their body (digestion) as well as how one takes care of their skin.

Proper skin care is very important, here are my recommendations:

1) Cleanse gently.
2) Exfoliate with the p50 formula appropriate for your skin type (essential to balance the pH of your skin and to ensure proper hydration).
3) Use a hyaluronic acid serum like Valmont’s hydra3 regenetic or Biologique Recherche’s Serum Yall o2 to keep skin plump & hydrated and, yes, looking younger.

Babies are born with a high level of hyaluronic acid, which keeps their skin plump and smooth. Unfortunately, the amount of hyaluronic acid in skin diminishes with age, most significantly after age 40.  While it’s not possible to maintain that perfect dewy baby-skin, it is possible to help restore the skin’s hyaluronic acid content and give grown-up skin a younger, fresher, smoother, more supple and hydrated look. Applied topically it increases hydration, improves elasticity and also reverses free radical damage. For those who get injectables hyaluronic acid prolongs the plumping effect.  All skin types, even oily, can benefit from using hyaluronic acid serum.

4) Mature and drier skin types should always apply moisturizer to prevent transepidermal water loss and to lock in the moisture .

To maintain optimal hydration we need to focus on proper nutrition and drinking plenty of water. Water is the body’s principal chemical component and makes up about 60% of our body weight. All systems and organs in our bodies depend on water. We need water even for healthy bones.  As much as 75% of the body weight of a newborn infant is water, whereas some adults are as little as 45% water by weight.  When you become dehydrated the body pulls water from your tissues (skin) to maintain the concentration in your blood.  When this happens your eyes may look sunken, skin may feel drier it’s not going to be as elastic or supple, and so you will look much older.
The first symptom of dehydration is not thirst, it’s usually fatigue, feeling tired.
Healing with water is legendary… staying hydrated properly is scientifically proven to be essential.
At Rescue we emphasize the importance of hydration.  We prepare infused water daily and offer it to clients upon their arrival.  We offer two choices that I recommend to everyone to make at home as well:

1) Filtered ionized water infused with orange, cucumber and mint.
2) Filtered ionized water infused with lemon and lime (my favorite beauty booster in the morning).

As for nutrition (Philadelphia has amazing produce markets) try to incorporate a variety of seasonal vegetables, fruits, local fish, meats and cheeses.  Avoid processed food, sugars, white flour, soda, and hydrogenated fats to maintain a healthy body and skin.  Focus on incorporating healthy protein, whole grains, skin healthy fats like omegas 3, 6, & 9 from foods like avocado & coconut, as well as probiotics to maintain a healthy digestive system.  A healthy liver is responsible for healthy skin.

Here I’d like to share my “Skin Glow” juice recipe.  I use an Omega juicer, but any juicer will do the trick. 🙂

1 Cucumber
A few sprigs of Parsley
2 stalks of Celery
A handful of Kale
1 Apple
1/2 a Lemon
1 small piece of Ginger

Increase your energy and super hydrate with this simple juice… and don’t forget to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily!

If you’re thinking surgery… think eMatrix at Rescue first.

As the new year begins it is always great to have a fresh start.  I want to make sure that I exercise, eat right, feel good, and look my best.  As a 45 year old woman in the beauty industry, I too am a consumer and admitted “beauty junkie”.  I am constantly on the quest for new treatments, the latest beauty products, and the most advanced non-invasive procedures that will help me look just as good as I feel. So when I found eMatrix I was stunned at how great the results were from the treatment.  My skin looked refreshed, clearer, firmer, and I got tons of compliments!

The technology is brilliant. Unlike other treatments that work from the outside in, eMatrix works from the inside out by providing sublative rejuvenation (a fractionated bi-polar radio frequency energy delivering bulk dermal heating beneath the skin to maximize collagen production while keeping the top layer of skin intact).  This means that eMatrix targets collagen production (one can never have enough!), and the results from just one treatment are so wonderfully visible.

eMatrix is especially suited for

  • those considering cosmetic surgery
  • wrinkles and irregularities
  • acne scars
  • pigmentation and sun damage
  • sagging skin

It is the only sublative rejuvenation that can be done on any skin type and color.  The treatment takes 45 minutes, you experience a warm prickly sensation, and you might need to wear makeup for a few days, as there is a little bit of downtime involved. But hey no pain, no gain!

If you’re thinking surgery or have a persistent skin characteristic that hasn’t responded to conventional skin care treatments, then think eMatrix at Rescue first.  Call and schedule a free consultation (215) 772-2766 or email us at info@rescuerittenhousespa.com
